Water Mystery

  • No one knows where spring originates. It filters through the coral rock
  • Porey Springs is a great place to cool down while exploring the interior of the island. Visitors welcome to use the spring
  • Chat with the locals – there’s a steady trickle using the spring throughout the day

Water springs to aid during drought

Porey Springs’ resident Vincent Sylvester (featured in video and known to everyone as “Bang”) is convinced the mysterious water has health properties. Everyone knows someone in the village who has lived to a ripe old age and the water is often credited with this longevity.

Coral acts as a natural filter – so some ground pollution is removed as the water trickles through the rock. But it’s not recommended that visitors drink it.

As a result of the island-wide drought, Porey Springs often has its water supply turned off. The natural spring is a truly “a gift from above” for residents, who bottle it and take it home for use around the house and garden.
